U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and WMPI Chamber Concert
The United States Army Band and Strings “Pershing’s Own” joins the Washington Musical Pathways Initiative in a special chamber side-by-side concert. Join us to experience ensembles ranging from a nonet to a “Silk-Road-inspired” quintet, where musicians will perform works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Felix Mendelssohn, Jessie Montgomery, and Heitor Villa-Lobos.

WMPI Workshop: "Arts2Advocacy" with Dante' Pope
Led by international touring musician and educator Dante' Pope, "Arts2Advocacy" will be an interactive virtual session integrating performing arts with social justice topics. Arts2Advocacy has engaged youth for over a decade in speaking to issues in the arts and their community. During the session, we’ll dive into various arts to advocacy topics and performance styles. We’ll collectively arrange, write, and record a song together (one verse and one chorus) within an hour that ties into our topics. Be prepared to collaborate, be creative, and most of all ADVOCATE!
Students are asked to create accounts in Soundtrap, an online DAW (recording software). We will use Soundtrap to record and collaborate as an ensemble.

WMPI Workshop: Expression & Communication for Performers
In a workshop led by interdisciplinary artist, actor, director, and teacher Daniel Pettrow, WMPI Artists will participate in skill building for increasing expression and communication as performing artists. We will take part in exercises to deepen and utilize full presence when performing, how to increase your dramatic range, exercises to deal with stage-fright and nerves, and ways to increase confidence on stage.

Join Derek Powell, NSO violinist, as he presents a violin and viola masterclass to fellows and artists of the NSO Youth Fellowship and Washington Musical Pathways Initiative. The class will take place at 4 pm-6 pm at the Sardar Classroom at the Kennedy Center’s The Reach. All are welcome.
Derek Powell was appointed to the National Symphony Orchestra in 2020 by Music Director Gianandrea Noseda. Prior to joining the NSO, Derek served in the military as a violinist in the U.S Army Band “Pershing’s Own” where he performed at the White House for State visits and other high profile events. As a military musician, he also regularly performed in service of congressional and military leadership in addition to giving performances to the general public. Derek is a frequent guest artist with the Grammy Award®-nominated contemporary music ensemble Inscape and is a regular performer-educator with Sound Impact, a music collective using music education and engagement to further positive social change. Derek also coaches with the NSO Youth Fellowship program and at the DC Youth Orchestra Program.
Derek earned a Bachelor of Science double major with honors in Neurobiology and Music from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and graduated with his Master of Music degree from Rice University, where he was awarded the Distinguished Fellowship in Violin. Derek continued his studies as a fellow in the New World Symphony, “America’s Orchestral Academy”, in Miami Beach, FL, under the baton of Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas. His primary teachers include David Perry, Kathleen Winkler, Felicia Moye, and Eugene Purdue. In the summer Derek performs with the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra and has previously performed with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra in Switzerland and the Strings Festival Orchestra in Steamboat Springs, CO. Derek lives in D.C. with his wife Allyson Goodman, principal violist of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra.

Learn strategies and tools for managing your time, organizing your workflow and routines, and rewarding your efforts to stay motivated and engaged. We'll also discuss techniques that maximize practice and performance outcomes. Bring your calendar, a computer or tablet, and the copies of pieces you're working on.

Adam Hockman is a practice and performance consultant on the faculty of the Heifetz International Music Institute. He applies his training in behavioral and learning science to music practice, performance, and teaching, and writes about these subjects for different music sites and magazines. Levine Music presents Composition Weekend: Piano and Strings Improvisation Master Class
Join musicians from the Kassia ensemble for a workshop on the art of improvisation. Sam Post is a Levine faculty member, pianist, composer, and improvisor. Susanna Mendlow is a cellist who plays in a wide variety of styles, including classical, world music, contemporary, and improvisation.

Come join us for a lunch-time concert as James Nickel and Bob Rearden, horn players from the NSO, perform in this cozy space. Alejandra and Veronica Anzola, violin students from the Washington Musical Pathways Initiative, will open up the concert with Venezuelan music.

The American Poetry Museum is a community space that fosters poetry as a tool of communication, self-expression, and education. Local poets often collaborate with musicians in this space as a way to intersect both music and writing. Natasha and Zino Bogachek, violinists from the NSO and Opera House Orchestra, will collaborate with two local poets. Multi-instrumentalist Kenji Yokote, who is a cellist in the Washington Musical Pathways Initiative in addition to a fantastic jazz pianist, will close out the performance with jazz standards on the keyboard.

WMPI presents a Career Day workshop featuring leading artists and administrators in music performance, composition, conducting, and arts administration, with an all-star panel: Jauvon Gilliam, principal timpanist in the National Symphony Orchestra; Risa Kaneko, DCYOP development associate, arts administrator, and pianist; and Maestra Tania León, acclaimed composer, conductor, and educator.
