This virtual workshop is designed to teach best practices and innovative approaches for individual artists to enhance their personal brand, grow their audiences with values-driven content, and leverage revenue streams in a 21st-century landscape. Takeaways include the essential elements of an artist statement, composing a visual identity for owned media, serving your community, diving into the nuts of bolts of a social media strategy, and exploring other digital strategies. Dr. Ceylon Mitchell, contemporary classical flutist, educator, entrepreneur, and arts marketer, will lead this interactive workshop.

About Dr. Ceylon Mitchell

Dr. Ceylon Mitchell II is a contemporary classical flutist, educator, entrepreneur, and arts marketer on a mission to celebrate historically marginalized voices in music, especially from Black and Latinx cultures. Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Ceylon earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Maryland School of Music in Flute Performance where he also received a Graduate Certificate in Multimedia Journalism. He has performed in venues such as Boston’s Symphony Hall, the Music Center at Strathmore, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Recent achievements include the Strathmore Artist in Residence Class of 2021, a Prince George’s County Forty UNDER 40 Award in Arts & Humanities, and numerous Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council Artist Fellowship Grants. His diverse repertoire spans from classical to folk music traditions across the Americas with research focusing on Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian flute traditions across genres.

Ceylon has supported performing artists, arts organizations, and beyond with personalized multimedia production and digital marketing consulting as the founder and co-owner of M3 | Mitchell Media & Marketing, LLC. Tailored services include photography, videography, web design, and digital media marketing. Clients include Americans for the Arts, International Contemporary Ensemble, The New School, Quinteto Latino, ARTSFAIRFAX, and numerous individual artists. Together with his wife and business partner, Denys Symonette Mitchell, Ceylon seeks to equip and empower his fellow performing artists for artistic and marketing success in a 21st-century landscape.

Previously, Ceylon has served as the Assistant Director of Communications & Creative Media with Washington Performing Arts, Communications & Public Relations Manager with the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County, a grants contractor with the D.C. Commission on the Arts & Humanities, and a Communications & Media Coordinator with UMD Office of Community Engagement. Dr. Mitchell is also an active arts advocate in the D.C. area, serving as a National Flute Association Career and Artistic Development Committee member, a Umoja Flute Institute marketing committee advisor, a former board member with Arts Administrators of Color Network, and an Arts Advocates Network of Maryland (AAMN) member with Maryland Citizens for the Arts. Ceylon currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland with his wife and two sons.
