Frequently Asked Questions
How are applicants evaluated for inclusion?
The 2024-2025 selection process includes a preliminary video audition, written response, teacher recommendation, interview, and live final audition, assessing candidates’ musical performance, commitment, and enthusiasm. The audition jury consists of representatives from partner organizations and members of the musical community.
How many students are in the program?
There are 7 openings for the 2024-2025 season, with priority given to woodwind, brass, viola, and double bass candidates. We aim to serve 35 students total.
How are students supported throughout their pathway?
A Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) is tailored to the student's needs to create a pathway toward acceptance into a music conservatory or 4-year college for music performance. It may include financial, musical, social-emotional, academic, family engagement, and peer-to-peer elements. Support is adjusted to reflect students’ changing needs and circumstances.
How are Artists evaluated during the program?
Progress is monitored through semi-annual juries and assessed through private semi-annual advisory meetings with WMPI staff, Artists, families, teachers, and (may include) mentors.
I am not part of any WMPI organizations. Can I still apply?
Yes. Students who are not part of a WMPI partner organization are eligible and encouraged to apply.
Is youth orchestra participation required for WMPI Artists?
WMPI Artists are required to participate in a youth orchestra outside of a school orchestra or band program in the Greater DC-metropolitan area. Artists have fully funded tuition through the DC Youth Orchestra Program. While Artists may opt to participate in a youth orchestra program outside of the partner organizations, WMPI does not provide tuition assistance for participation in youth orchestras of outside organizations.
Are students required to study with a certain teacher?
If a student is accepted into the program and already has a private teacher, the student may continue with their current teacher. Due to the rigorous pace and high-performance standards of the Pathways Initiative, all Artists are advised to study with a teacher who has a track record of getting students accepted into music college/conservatory programs and/or with a teacher that has attended one. Teacher changes that take place are the result of a discussion by the student, parent, teacher, and WMPI staff.
