Presented by Levine Music, join us in a free masterclass featuring WMPI Artists led by musicians of the “President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band and Strings. The evening will begin with a free concert by the Marine Band musicians, followed by a master class.
The Marine Band’s Fall Chamber Music Series continues with a concert titled “Electric Counterpoint.”
This concert includes three pieces that have never been performed by “The President’s Own” chamber ensembles: Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Trio Sonata No. 3 in B-Flat, ZWV 181, Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Grosse Fuge, Opus 133. The Zelenka sidesteps traditional baroque era tropes with its chromaticism and hums with energy. Reich’s Electric Counterpoint introduces interesting ideas about what counterpoint and chamber music is through an electronic medium, while Beethoven’s Fuge still holds its shock value 199 years after it was composed.
